Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of wagering options and because you have many players trying for the high, as well as many shooting for the low.
