Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/low.
