Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi/lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an exciting collection of betting choices and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as many battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha hi/low.
