Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi/lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems difficult at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of wagering choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, and many trying for the low.
